Have you ever been to the incredible Mills Mansion at the Staatsburgh State Historic Site? This Gilded Age marvel looks like it was transported straight out of the 1890s, but a visit to the site isn't just an architectural experience; in fact, there are several great events being hosted at the mansion in the upcoming weeks! With children's stories and crafts, ornament making, and a holiday whodunit, there is truly something for everyone at the Mills Mansion!
On Wednesday, December 12, take your kids to the mansion for the Children’s Story Hour & Holiday Craft event, which lasts from 10 a.m. until noon. This activity is designed for pre-school-age children and will include stories read by Staatsburg Children's' Librarian, Lisa Prentiss, and a fun holiday craft! Participation is free, but registration is required. Make reservations for your kids by calling (845) 889-8851, ext. 300.
If your kids are a little older, then they might enjoy the Kids Craft Workshop: Make A Mouse House, which is happening December 26-28 from 10:30 a.m. until noon. These workshops are designed for children ages 6-10 and include a brief tour of the house followed by using craft materials to build their own mouse house to take home! An adult must accompany each child. The cost is $8 per child or $15 for a family of up to 3 children. Once again, you can make your reservations by calling (845) 889-8851, ext. 300.
Of course, no one will blame you if you'd rather attend an event for an older group! On Friday, December 14, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., head over to the mansion to make your own ornament at the Paper Quilling Workshop. After touring the mansion for inspiration, you and your friend (or teen!) will be given all of the knowledge and materials needed to make your own paper-quilled ornament. Plus, you can enjoy refreshments as you work. Reservations can be made by calling the same number listed above. The cost is $15 per person or $12 for Friends of Mills Mansion.
Finally, bring the whole family for the mysterious Holiday Whodunit Family Program, happening each Sunday from 1-4 p.m. You and your kids will explore the mansion and get clues from costumed guides. The cost is $8 per adult, $6 per senior/student, and free for children 12 & under. Solving the mystery takes about an hour, so be sure to arrive by 3 p.m.
